Mayor Mickey Cafagna passed away on April 11, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. A Poway resident for over 30 years, Cafagna served on the City Council since 1992 and became Mayor in 1998. “Mickey was a peacemaker and leader in every sense of the word,” said Deputy Mayor Don Higginson. “ He had a way of bringing people together on the issues.”
My most deepest condolences to the entire Cafagna family.
ReplyDeleteMy prayers are with you,
Al Kohn
I recall Mayor Mickey telling my son, after he had made a presentation for the PMRR depot, that he would endorse my son when he ran for Mayor. Thinking about that always brought a smile to my family. Thanks for the memories.

Sharon and family, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. It was an honor to know Mickey and to work with him, and I will miss him very much.
ReplyDeleteAfter knowing Mickey for over 30 years as an employer and then as a dear friend, it will be hard not seeing his smiling face with a twinkle in his eye after he made you laugh. We saw him last summer and even though he was not physically the way we remembered him, he was still the good old Mickey, with his warmth, kindness, stories to tell, and quick wit, we realized that the Mickey we knew and loved was still there. Although his physical being will no longer be with us, his spirit will always be with us, with a twinkle and smile. All our love to Sharon, Stacy, Kevin and the grandkids. Andy and Adele Mandell
ReplyDeleteKendra and I send our love and prayers to Sharon and the family. I fondly remember the many Poway Chamber Installations where I had the privilege of introducing Mickey and poking good-natured fun at his Italian heritage. The qualities of humor and grace were such a part of this wonderful man. We will miss him greatly. Jay and Kendra Jeffcoat

ReplyDeleteSharon...Our hearts go out to you and your family. We have all lost a great guy. Mickey was simply the very best elected official...he watched over Poway, he thought regionally, and everyone he met basked in his smile.
ReplyDeleteWe were all lucky to know him.

Mickey Cafagna was a great regional leader and thinker for San Diego. He had a keen ability to bring people together to solve problems for the common good. Mickey alsways looked at the "big picture" and was instrumental in setting regional public policy.

ReplyDeleteI first met Mickey before my step-daughter's wedding, and he took my face in his hands and gave me two big kisses and a great big hug. And you knew when you were talking to him, he was listening to every word. His devotion to family, friends, and public service was admirable. He was my husband's favorite Uncle, and mine as well.

I met Mayor Cafagna only once. But that one time was really special. I had just returned from Iraq and my neighbor was hosting a little get together. The Mayor showed up almost at the end of the party. His intent was just to say hi to me and thank me for my service to our great country. What a pleasure and thrill it was for me. We have lost a fine Mayor and great American.
ReplyDeleteMay God bless the Mayor and his family.

Thank you Sir for serving our city so well. You will be missed.
ReplyDeleteAs a resident of Poway (and a news reporter covering the city)in the 90s, I had the privilege of getting to know Mickey and Sharon on a personal basis. He was always so full of life and spirit. Through the years, I could always count on his big bear hugs whenever I saw him. From being an intelligent source for news articles, to being my teammate at many years of City vs Chamber softball games, Mickey was truly one of a kind. He will be missed!!!
ReplyDeleteOur thoughts and prayers are with the entire family. Mickey helped make Poway the beautiful community that it is and his leadership crossed over many boundries. He took care of things real well and now he will be watching over his loved City, family, and friends from above. He'll always be present. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteWhat a kind and gracious man! Mayor Cafagna was instrumential in getting this hotel in Poway. I met him at our grand opening where he was very supportive and said a few words to welcome everyone. It was obvious that he wanted to see the hotel succeed. Sharon, we will always be grateful to your family. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWe met Mickey and his wife Sharon at the home of friends of ours in Escondido two years ago. They had arranged the meeting because both Mickey and my husband shared the same disease -- kidney cancer. Mickey's journey was just beginning and he wanted to meet us and talk to us about so many different aspects of this disease. We spent several hours together and felt like we were saying goodbye to a life long friend when the evening came to an end. We've kept in touch with Mickey via email and phone calls since and we are so sorry to hear that he's made his exit from this life. He supported me when I went to Washington DC to lobby for funding to find a cure for this cancer and to raise awareness. He gave me a picture of himself, his wife and his grandchildren to take with me and I personally delivered his request to our California Senators. He shared a copy of the personal reply he got from Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. I know that his family and the people of Poway will miss him. We will hold him in our hearts as well.
ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure of working with Mickey several years ago at Square One Development. He always came to work with that big smile and optimistic attitude! He was a true gentleman, great family man and community leader who lived his life fully every day. He will be missed but he leaves a wonderful legacy. Our condolences to the family. Gary & Vicki Watts
